Woodbine has a founding story unlike anywhere else on the Jersey shore. In 1891, the Baron de Hirsch Fund purchased 5,300 acres of Cape May County woodland and laid out a planned colony — a haven for Eastern European Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution, and one of the first self-governed agricultural settlements of its kind in the country. The colonists cleared the forest, built a town, and farmed; the original 1891 street grid still defines the center of the borough today. Woodbine was incorporated as its own borough, separate from Dennis Township, in 1903.

The town grew into more than a farm colony. Its Baron de Hirsch Agricultural School drew world-class talent — graduate Selman Waksman later won a Nobel Prize for discovering streptomycin — and when farming gave way to industry, Woodbine became a manufacturing center. That legacy still anchors the town: the old college campus is now the Woodbine Developmental Center, Cape May County's largest employer. Today Woodbine is a small, multi-ethnic, year-round community set in the quiet mainland interior, bordered by Belleplain State Forest and surrounded by Dennis and Upper Townships.
