About Lawnside
Lawnside is one of the most historically significant square miles in New Jersey. Incorporated in 1926, it was the first independent, self-governing Black municipality north of the Mason–Dixon line — and in 2026 it marks its centennial. Long before that, the community was known as Free Haven, established in 1840 when Quaker abolitionist Ralph Smith bought the land and sold affordable lots to free and formerly enslaved African American families. It was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and the restored Peter Mott House still stands as a monument to that era. To this day Lawnside remains a proud, close-knit, predominantly African American community with deep multigenerational roots — a rare and remarkable continuity in American history.
That heritage is the heart of the borough, and it shows in how tightly held the housing is. Lawnside is overwhelmingly a community of detached single-family homes, from long-owned older houses on its established streets to newer construction in subdivisions like Lions Gate Estates and Warwick Hills. Because families here tend to stay for generations, inventory is limited and well-priced homes move quickly — there are regularly attainable options for buyers, including a real share of homes under $300,000, which is increasingly hard to find this close to Philadelphia.
For a borough its size, the location is hard to beat. The White Horse Pike, Interstate 295, and the New Jersey Turnpike all run through or alongside Lawnside, putting Camden, Cherry Hill, and Philadelphia within an easy drive. Younger students attend Lawnside Public School, the borough's own K–8 district, with older students continuing on to Haddon Heights High School, which also serves Barrington and Haddon Heights.
Homes in Lawnside don't come up often, and when a just-listed home does hit the market, it rarely lasts long. The searches above pull live from the MLS. Joe Wiessner Realty has worked this market since 2002, and we know Lawnside and its neighbors street by street.
