Lonaconing Trail was used by Native Americans to traverse the wilderness of Southern New Jersey. Lonaconing in its pure context means “meeting place of streams”. What is now Berlin was once known as “Longacoming” a derivative of the authentic Indian term. Long-A-Coming became a stagecoach stop located at the halfway point between Philadelphia and Atlantic City.

Stagecoaches were replaced by a rail line in 1853 with a station built three years later named Long-A-Coming. Confusion over the name resulted in renaming the stop Berlin Station, the namesake of today’s community. The most obvious use of the name Lonaconing is a housing development in Berlin. The community has 97 luxury town-homes with an additional 46 single family homes. Located off of Cross Keys Road adjacent to Berlin Park, the community was designed with physical fitness in mind. Walking trails, ball fields, and tennis courts are all a part of the Lonaconing Lifestyle.
