About Bordentown City
Bordentown is a small historic city on the Delaware at the northern edge of Burlington County — barely a square mile, laid out in a walkable grid that runs down to the river. Farnsworth Avenue is the spine, lined with restaurants, antique shops and storefronts, and the side streets give away how old the place is: Prince, Borden, Hopkinson, Crosswicks. Thomas Paine lived here, and Joseph Bonaparte built his American estate on the bluff above the water.
What separates Bordentown from the rest of Burlington County is the housing itself. Roughly half of everything that trades here is attached — twins, semi-detached homes and rowhouses built shoulder to shoulder on tight city lots. That is genuinely unusual in this county, and it is the reason the entry point into a historic walkable town stays within reach. Detached single-family exists all through the grid as well, but it shares the streets with everything else rather than sitting off in subdivisions.
The range is wider than a city this size suggests. Small twins on the numbered streets sit at one end, restored center-hall homes on Prince and Farnsworth at the other, and the midpoint lands right around $400,000. That spread is what keeps the town mixed — first-time buyers, downsizers and people trading up all shop the same few blocks, which is also why well-priced houses here do not sit.
Buyers searching "Bordentown" are usually looking at two different municipalities without realizing it. Bordentown City and Bordentown Township are separate governments, each with its own mayor, governing body and municipal tax rate, and they offer genuinely different housing — the city is a walkable historic grid, the township is subdivisions. What they do not differ on is schools. Bordentown Regional serves the city, the township and Fieldsboro Borough as one district, with Clara Barton and MacFarland Intermediate right here in the city for grades two through five, and Peter Muschal, Bordentown Regional Middle and Bordentown Regional High across the line in the township. Every child in both towns moves through the same five schools. Choosing between the city and the township is a choice about the kind of house and the kind of street — not about where your kids go.
Named communities are few, because most of Bordentown is simply the historic grid. Kings Gate on Park Street is the one true condominium address in the city, and Bordentown Crosswick accounts for a cluster of twins over on Mary and Thompson. Beyond those two, attached homes here are individual houses on individual streets rather than anything with an association behind it.
Location is a real part of the value. The NJ Transit RiverLine runs through town on a direct light-rail ride to Trenton and Camden, Routes 130 and 206 handle the rest, and Turnpike Exit 7 is minutes away, which puts both Philadelphia and central Jersey in play from the same address.
