Living in Country Aire

Country Aire is a detached neighborhood in Gloucester Township, built in phases between the late 1970s and the mid-1980s off Sicklerville Road, just north of the Atlantic City Expressway interchange. It is a compact community — a loop with courts hanging off it — and one of the quieter pockets in this part of the township despite sitting minutes from the highway.

Note the spelling before you search, because it costs people listings: it is Country Aire, with an E. Searches for "Country Air" will not return this community, and it is filed that way consistently in the MLS. If you have been looking for this neighborhood and coming up empty, that is almost certainly why.

The street plan is built on cul-de-sacs. Briar Creek Road and Dunlin Way carry the loop, with Foxwood Court, Willet Court and Sherwick Court ending in circles off them. Nothing here is a through route, so traffic has no reason to enter, and the homes at the head of each court pick up the wider lots the circle creates. Two of the names are worth noticing — Dunlin and Willet are both shorebirds, an odd and rather charming pick for a neighborhood twenty miles inland.

The houses reflect the two build windows. The earlier phase runs to colonials and split levels in three-bedroom layouts; the later phase brought bi-levels with four bedrooms and three full baths. Both forms do the same useful thing — they separate living space from sleeping space by half a flight, which keeps the house open while still zoning it, and the lower level is finished living space rather than a basement. Lots here are generous for the era, with room for real backyard use, and a number of these homes have pools.

Forty-odd years in, what has been updated is what separates two otherwise comparable houses. Roofs, heating and air, kitchens, baths and windows have all been done on separate schedules across this neighborhood, and in a community this size a single well-maintained home coming to market is a real event rather than one option among many. Country Aire does not turn over often — that is good news if you own here and a scheduling problem if you want in, because it means being ready when something lists rather than waiting for the spring to bring choices.

On the address: this end of the township carries a Sicklerville 08081 mailing address, which is a post office rather than a municipality. Country Aire is in Gloucester Township, on Gloucester Township taxes and in Gloucester Township schools, with Black Horse Pike Regional for high school.
