White Horse Garden Homes for Sale

Detached ranchers and Cape Cods built in the 1950s on the streets off the White Horse Pike. Live from the MLS.

Living in White Horse Garden

White Horse Garden sits directly along the White Horse Pike in Somerdale, on the streets that run off both sides of it — Browning, Pennsylvania, Amhurst, Haverford, Grant, Cooper, Webster and Colby Avenues, with Hunt and Raws running back toward the Cooper River woods on the eastern edge. The name comes from the road, and the road is what defines the neighborhood: everything here is close to it.

The streets went up through the 1950s, a few years earlier than most of the borough's other detached construction, and the product reflects the decade squarely. Ranch/Ramblers dominate at three and four bedrooms, one to two baths, on a single floor. Cape Cods fill in around them — three bedrooms, one bath, hardwood on the main level and expandable space upstairs. These are compact, straightforward, well-built postwar houses.

Full basements are common here, which is worth noting because they are not universal across Somerdale — several of the borough's neighborhoods sit on crawl space. Attached garages show up on some of the ranchers with front entry off the driveway, though they are not standard. Natural gas forced air throughout, public water and public sewer, frame construction. Central air is present on some and absent on others, which is a real monthly difference in an older house and one of the things that separates two otherwise similar listings.

Lots are level with fenced rear yards and patios, and the deeper parcels on the eastern streets back toward the treeline along the river rather than onto another house. Sidewalks throughout.

The single-level stock is the draw. In a market where most affordable inventory means stairs or an attached wall, a three-bedroom rancher on its own lot is a specific search — and this neighborhood holds more of them than anywhere else in the borough. If that is what you are after, the borough-wide single-story ranch homes page pulls every one of them together.

Being on the Pike cuts both ways and it is worth being honest about. The corridor puts everything within reach — shopping, restaurants, transit, Route 30 immediately and Route 42 minutes out, with the PATCO Speedline at Lindenwold running into Center City. The interior streets are quiet; the ones closest to the Pike carry its noise. Which side of that line a house sits on matters here more than it does in the borough's tucked-away neighborhoods.

Sterling High School, the regional high school serving five surrounding towns, is inside the borough, and younger students attend Somerdale Park School through eighth grade. Buyers looking here should also see Warwick Gardens, the borough's largest detached neighborhood, and Juniper Hills for newer detached construction. If low maintenance matters more than a detached wall, see Somerdale condos and townhomes. For where these have actually been landing, see recently sold homes.

Mostly Single Level.
