Living in Saratoga
Saratoga sits at the southern end of Stratford, on the long loop of Saratoga Road with Oak Drive, Oak Court, Liberty Drive and Academy Drive branching off it. The neighborhood runs right up against the Laurel Springs line and the woods along the creek, and the lots on the outside of the loop back into that treeline. Everything curves; nothing cuts through.
Look at this neighborhood from the air and one thing jumps out immediately: the pools. There are more in-ground pools per block here than anywhere else in Stratford, by a wide margin — a run of backyards down Saratoga Road and Oak Drive with water in nearly every one. That is not an accident of taste. It is what happens when a subdivision goes in during the 1960s on lots deep enough to hold one, and the yards here are deep. If a pool is on the list, this is the neighborhood in the borough where you have a real chance of buying a house that already has it rather than putting one in. See the borough's pool homes for what is currently on the market.
The houses date to the early 1960s. Ranch/Ramblers are the dominant style — three and four bedrooms, running close to 1,900 square feet on the larger plans, which is a substantial rancher and larger than the type usually runs. Split levels and bi-levels fill in around them. Several plans put a fourth bedroom and a half bath on a lower level while keeping the main living space on one floor, so you get the space of a two-story with most of the convenience of single-level living.
Central air is standard, gas heat, public water and public sewer. Basements are not universal here — some of these sit on slab or have the lower level finished as living space instead — which is a real difference from the borough's older neighborhoods and worth confirming on any particular house. Garages appear on some and not others.
The single-level stock is the draw beyond the pools. A four-bedroom rancher on a deep lot is a specific and hard-to-find thing in Camden County, and Saratoga holds more of them than the rest of the borough combined. If stairs are the constraint, the borough-wide single-story ranch homes search pulls every one.
Being at the far end of the borough means it is quieter here than on the Pike, with a slightly longer drive to everything. The White Horse Pike and Route 30 are a few minutes north, Route 42 and I-295 beyond that, and the PATCO Speedline runs into Center City from the Stratford station. Rowan University's School of Osteopathic Medicine and Jefferson Stratford Hospital sit inside the borough, a short drive from these streets.
Students attend the Stratford Borough schools through eighth grade and continue to regional Sterling High School. Buyers looking here should also see Laurel Mill Farms, the borough's largest postwar neighborhood, Stratford Estates, and Olde Stratford if walking to the train matters more than the yard. For where these have actually been landing, see recently sold homes.
