Living in Woods Edge

Woods Edge is a detached neighborhood in Gloucester Township built in 2000, and it has a characteristic almost no other community here can claim: every house is a four-bedroom. Not mostly, not a range with four-bedroom plans available — four bedrooms is the standard and there is no smaller plan. For a buyer who needs that count and is tired of filtering it out of every search, this is the neighborhood to start with.

The houses are colonials with two and a half baths, and a few carrying a third full or a second half. Formal living and dining rooms, a family room off an island kitchen, main-floor powder room, two-car front-entry garages with inside access, and driveways deep enough that six cars park without touching the street. Basements are partially finished in most, with the laundry down and a concrete crawl for storage beyond it. Primary suites carry vaulted ceilings, a large walk-in and a private bath. Crown moldings and wainscotting show up throughout — builder-standard in 2000, and it reads better now than the flat-wall houses of the decade before.

The streets are flowers and shrubs, one after another — Daffodil, Firethorn, Larkspur, Azalea, Redbud, Rosebush, Sagebrush — and that naming continues west into the neighborhoods next door, so the whole stretch reads as one continuous garden. Larkspur Circle is the spine here and it wraps the community rather than running through it, which means the same street name turns up on four different sides of the neighborhood. Worth keeping straight when you are comparing addresses.

Yards are the practical draw. These are fenced, flat and big enough for a full patio with an above-ground pool and a shed and still have lawn left — pools turn up here regularly rather than occasionally. Lawn sprinklers, sidewalks, natural gas heat, central air, public water and public sewer. The Atlantic City Expressway runs along the eastern boundary behind a tree buffer, so the outer arc of Larkspur and Sayre Drive sit closer to it than the interior streets do — a difference you hear rather than see, and one to check on foot.

The obvious comparison is next door: Mayfair Woods shares the flower-street naming and sits immediately west, built about five years earlier. Woods Edge is the newer of the two and more uniform. Forest Ridge is the same year and the same four-bedroom colonial format on the other side of the township, and Mulberry Station covers similar ground a decade earlier at a lower entry.
