Living in Whitman Square

Whitman Square is the largest and busiest neighborhood in Washington Township — more homes change hands here in a year than anywhere else in the township. The bulk of it went up in 1959, with homes added on either side of that from the early 1950s into the early 1980s.

The street names are the most deliberate in the township, and they are all one theme: Lexington Avenue, Saratoga Terrace, Putnam Place, Revere Drive, Standish Drive, Jefferson Drive, Independence Place, Hancock Drive, Plymouth Place, Jamestown Road, Concord-style Coach Road, Whitman Drive and Terrace, alongside Merrymount, Richmond, Acadia, Grenville, Chatham, Preston, Johnson, Shawnee, Mohawk and McKinley. Battles, generals and colonial settlements, laid out street by street.

The build standard is the reason this neighborhood matters to a buyer. Basements are on nearly every home here and garages on most — which is the reverse of the township's other big older neighborhoods. Wedgewood and Heritage Valley have garages and almost no basements. Bells Lake has basements and almost no garages. Whitman Square is the large neighborhood where you can reasonably expect both, and it sits at a lower price than the newer communities offering the same.

The houses run the full mid-century range — ranchers, split levels, bi-levels, Cape Cods, colonials and traditionals — from three bedrooms up to five. Lots are consistent at around a quarter acre, with a handful running past half. In a neighborhood this size that consistency is unusual and it makes comparable sales genuinely useful here.

Searching it takes care. Whitman Square spans three postal names across two ZIP codes — Turnersville and Blackwood in 08012, and Sicklerville in 08081. The Sicklerville addresses matter most, because Sicklerville is mostly Winslow Township in Camden County — a different municipality with a different school district. These homes are not that. They are Washington Township, in the Washington Township school district, paying Gloucester County taxes.

One thing to verify address by address: a handful of homes here are not on public sewer. Most of the neighborhood is, but several records show septic arrangements — particularly along Johnson Road. In a neighborhood this large that is easy to assume away.

Volume is the practical advantage. There is always something available in Whitman Square, usually several at once, which makes it realistic to buy into on a normal timeline and keeps the comparable sales current. Schools are Washington Township High School for the whole township. The recently sold homes show where this market sits.
