Living in Ancora

Ancora is an unincorporated community in Winslow Township — a name on the map rather than a development. There is no entrance sign, no association, and no builder that put it up in a single phase. It is a scattering of houses along rural roads at the eastern edge of the township, best known for Ancora Psychiatric Hospital and, for anyone who has lived in the area a while, for the New Jersey state auto inspection station.

Because it is unincorporated, Ancora does not exist as a subdivision in the MLS. Listings here file under a street address, not under a community name, which is why searching “Ancora” on a national portal returns almost nothing useful. The grid on this page is drawn around the actual ground instead, so what you are seeing is what is genuinely for sale in Ancora rather than whatever a listing agent happened to type into a field.

Two things define the market. First, the mail says Hammonton 08037 — Atlantic County — but the ground is Winslow Township, Camden County. Township taxes, township services and Winslow Township Public Schools, not Hammonton’s. That surprises people late in the process, so it is worth knowing on day one. Second, this is acreage country. Houses here sit on real land, not quarter-acre lots, and buyers come for space and quiet rather than for sidewalks. If that is the appeal, the township’s larger-lot listings and its ranch homes pull heavily from this end of Winslow, and neighboring Elm and Blue Anchor sit on the same rural side of the township.
