Living in Elm

Elm is an unincorporated section of Winslow Township, and it is the genuinely agricultural end of it. Spring Road, Walker Road, Fleming Pike and Wiltseys Mill Road are the mainstays out here, and what sits along them is not a subdivision or a scattering of large-lot houses dressed up as country living. These are working farms — operations running hundreds of acres, farmed by people who farm for a living.

That changes what a listing in Elm means. A house here might sit on half an acre or on six, and the difference is not a matter of preference — it is the difference between a house in farm country and a piece of farm country with a house on it. Lot size does more to set value here than square footage does, and no two properties out this way are really comparable in the way two houses in a subdivision are. Anyone shopping Elm should be reading the acreage first.

Locally, Elm is known for Pastore’s farm market, and old-timers still give directions off the White Horse Farm market, closed now for the better part of twenty years. The mail here goes out as Hammonton 08037, an Atlantic County post office, but the ground is Winslow Township, Camden County. One thing that catches people out: Elmtowne, the 55+ community, is in Elm and carries that same Hammonton address — similar name, entirely different housing. If land is the point, the township’s acre-plus listings lean heavily on this end of Winslow, and Blue Anchor and Ancora share the same rural character.
