Living in Colwick

Colwick sits in the 08002 section of Cherry Hill Township, on the grid south of Maple Avenue near the Haddonfield line. The streets are Colwick Road, Merion Road, Media Road, Overbrook Drive, Saint Davids Road, Saint Martins Road, Bala Road, Wayne Road and Lenape Road. No association, no gate, houses on their own lots.

Read those street names again if you know Philadelphia, because they are not random. Merion, Bala, Overbrook, St Davids, Wayne and Media are all stations on the Pennsylvania Railroad's Main Line — the string of western suburbs that meant old money and the right address. Colwick went up in 1950, when Cherry Hill was still Delaware Township and the buyers crossing the river from Philadelphia knew exactly what those names signified. Somebody was selling the idea of Bryn Mawr on the Jersey side, street by street, and the signs are still standing. You can check it against a regional rail map in about thirty seconds.

The housing is early post-war and it predates the township's own identity. Most of Colwick dates to 1950 through 1952 — up and occupied a decade before Cherry Hill took its name and well before the split-level subdivisions everyone pictures. Colonial is the dominant form with ranch and rambler plans alongside it. Three and four bedrooms, and the bath counts run high for the vintage — three full baths turns up repeatedly, which is unusual in 1950 stock and suggests these were built for buyers trading up rather than starting out. Basements throughout. The layout is a proper grid with sidewalks and short blocks, not the curving lanes that came later.

The eastern edge is where the lots earn a premium. A wooded creek corridor runs behind the streets on that side, so those rear boundaries end at trees and low ground rather than another fence, and seventy-five years of canopy has filled in above it. That is topography rather than landscaping, and it is not going to be built on. Ask which side of the neighborhood an address sits on.

One name to get right before you search. Colwick Road is inside this neighborhood. Colwick Drive is a separate pocket about a half mile southwest, on the other side of Haddonfield Road. Same name, two different places, and a portal search on the word returns both. Buyers shopping this vintage in 08002 generally also walk Barlow and Locustwood, with Cherry Parke the attached option nearby if a house is not the requirement.

Schools are Cherry Hill Township Public Schools, with Cherry Hill High School West across the addresses in this pull. Maple Avenue and Haddonfield Road put Route 70 and Route 38 within a couple of minutes, and downtown Haddonfield with its shops and its PATCO station is a short drive or a long walk west. The recently sold homes across the township are the clearest read on where post-war stock actually prices.
