Pre-war bungalows, cottages and capes off Route 38 in the 08002 section — live from the MLS.
Kenilworth Estates sits at the far north end of the 08002 section of Cherry Hill Township, on the block of streets running south off Route 38 at Kaighns Avenue. The streets are Northwood Avenue, Longwood Avenue, Beechwood Avenue, Kenilworth Avenue, Helena Avenue and Olive Street. It is a short, tight grid with a rail corridor along its eastern edge and Route 38 across the top — you are at a major highway in under a minute from any address in it.
The housing here is older than almost anything else carrying a Cherry Hill address. The recent record runs from 1920 to 1979, with the bulk of it built between 1940 and 1954 — Bungalow, Cottage, Cape Cod and Ranch/Rambler, with a pair of later Colonials at the top end. These are genuinely small houses on small lots, two to four bedrooms, and that is the point of the neighborhood rather than a knock on it. Most of Cherry Hill was built after the township renamed itself in 1961 and went suburban in earnest; Kenilworth Estates was already standing when that happened.
One structural thing to know going in. Bath counts are small and they do not grow with bedroom count — three of the recent records are single-bath houses, including a four-bedroom, and half baths are the exception rather than the standard. On a 1940s bungalow footprint there is often nowhere obvious to add one without taking space from somewhere else. Buyers who need a second full bath on the main floor tend to land on the ranch homes in the pull, which are the 1952-to-1960 end of the street and were laid out with the extra room from the start.
What this neighborhood does better than anywhere else in the township is get you in. Kenilworth Estates is where the Cherry Hill address starts, and it is one of the few pockets left where the whole range sits inside the under-$400K searches. That is also why it turns over — of the eight records in the recent pull, two are on the market or under contract right now, which is a lot of movement for a neighborhood this size. Infill has started to reach it too: new construction in the township means replacing a house on a lot rather than a community you drive to, and a pair of new twins has gone up on Northwood Avenue.
Schools are Cherry Hill Township Public Schools. Route 38 puts the Cherry Hill retail corridor, the Route 70 interchange and the bridges into Philadelphia all within a few minutes, and this is one of the shortest commutes to Center City of any neighborhood in the township — the trade-off for the highway and the rail line being that close. The recently sold homes across Cherry Hill are the clearest read on where this tier actually settles.
Built 1920.
Still trading.
