Neigh at Fries Mill Homes for Sale

Detached Colonials and Cape Cods on the west side of Clayton, built in the 1990s. Live from the MLS.

Living in Neigh at Fries Mill

Neigh at Fries Mill sits on the western edge of Clayton, where Fries Mill Road forms the border and Deschler Boulevard runs back into the neighborhood as its spine. Bacon Street, Beckett Street, Fisler Drive, Morgan Drive and the short courts off them — Hewitt, Hogate, Stanger — fill in behind it. Yes, that is the actual name of the community: the builder wrote it that way and it has been recorded that way ever since. Nobody has ever fixed it, and at this point nobody is going to.

What makes this neighborhood easy to read is how tightly it was built. Records here start in 1992 and finish in 1996 — the whole thing went up inside five years, so the houses share a generation and a spec sheet. Colonials dominate, with Cape Cods on a number of the streets and the occasional Traditional mixed in. Three and four bedrooms, two full baths and a powder room, aluminum siding on block foundations. What sets them apart from most of what trades in this borough is underneath: full basements, a good share of them finished into real living space, which is not something you find in the older parts of Clayton at all.

The lots are compact and suburban rather than sprawling — roughly a fifth of an acre, laid out about eighty feet wide and a hundred and thirteen deep. Detached garages with long driveways are the pattern here, so parking is generous even where the garage is a single. Natural gas forced air and central air are standard, water and sewer are both public, and decks, patios, sheds and fenced yards are common. If square footage and lot size are what you're after, Countryside on the east side of the borough runs larger on both counts, and the borough-wide four-bedroom search pulls the bigger houses from both neighborhoods together.

Clayton runs its own district rather than sending its students out to a regional high school, so children here attend Clayton Public Schools and Clayton High School without the mailing-address confusion that trips buyers up in half the towns around it. Fries Mill Road runs north toward Glassboro and Rowan University, Route 47 cuts through the middle of town, and Route 55 is close enough to make the Philadelphia commute workable. Scotland Run Park and Wilson Lake are a few minutes east. This is a stable neighborhood where houses turn over steadily rather than constantly, so if nothing here fits today it is worth watching the newest Clayton listings and where values are heading.
