About Mount Holly

Mount Holly is the county seat of Burlington County, and it does not look or behave like the townships around it. Where its neighbors are subdivisions and farmland, Mount Holly is a town in the older sense — a courthouse, a walkable main street, brick sidewalks, and a housing stock that runs from eighteenth-century townhouses to postwar ranchers to interior-row homes, sometimes within the same few blocks. That variety is the opportunity here and also the reason a generic search represents this township badly.

The historic district is the reason a lot of people fall for the place. Quakers settled the area on the Rancocas in 1677, the township carried the name Northampton for most of its life, and the streets from that period are still the heart of town: High, Mill, Garden, Union, Pearl, Broad, Brainerd. The houses along them are large, old and individual — five, seven and even nine bedroom places with several thousand square feet, which is a kind of property that has simply stopped being built. Restoration is often part of the deal. So is a level of architectural character no new construction anywhere in the county can match.

Away from the old town, Mount Holly is a set of ordinary and comfortable neighborhoods. Mount View is the largest, a broad postwar area running along Ridgley, Hawthorne, Evergreen and Ashurst. Bartram Manor, Highland Ridge, Holly Hills, Holly Park, Lakeview, Laurie Village, Mill Creek, Carriage Park, Claremont, Parc Ridge, Rancocas Village and Valley View fill in around it, mostly three and four bedroom detached homes on town-sized lots, with a good supply of single-story houses and plenty of four bedroom options.

At the entry end, Mount Holly is about as accessible as Burlington County gets. Mount Holly Gardens, Olde Mill Village and the Village at Parkers Mill are interior-row and attached communities, and together with the twins scattered through the older grid they give the township a real attached market. There is substantial inventory here under $300,000 — not one or two listings, but a working supply of them, which is increasingly rare within reach of this many jobs.

Schools are worth understanding because Mount Holly does it differently. The township runs three schools split by age band rather than by neighborhood: John Brainerd School on Wollner Drive takes preschool through first grade, Gertrude C. Folwell School takes second through fourth, and F.W. Holbein Middle School takes fifth through eighth. Every child in the township moves through all three. For ninth through twelfth, students attend Rancocas Valley Regional High School on Jacksonville Road — which is here, in Mount Holly. Rancocas Valley serves five communities across about forty square miles: Mount Holly plus Eastampton, Hainesport, Lumberton and Westampton. Of the five, only Mount Holly's students stay in their own township for high school.

Practically, being the county seat means the courts, county offices and a good deal of daily traffic are right here, with Route 38, the Mount Holly Bypass and the Turnpike at Exit 5 handling the rest.
