About Wenonah
Wenonah is about a square mile of Gloucester County and one of the few genuinely old places left in this part of the state. It was laid out in the 1870s as a planned commuter town along the railroad, and the bones of that plan are still what you see — curving tree-lined streets, deep front porches, and a housing stock that in places goes back to the 1880s. There is no strip development here, no subdivision sprawl, and not much turnover. People move to Wenonah and stay.
What that means practically is that this market has almost no subdivisions. Of the homes trading here, only a handful carry a community name at all — Academy Hills, Brookmeade, Wenonah Woods and the Synnott Tract — and everything else is filed by street: Clinton, Willow, Buttonwood, Marion, Jefferson, Princeton. If you are shopping Wenonah, you are shopping streets and individual houses, not developments. Prices generally run from the high two-hundreds into the seven-hundreds, with most of the market settling between four and six.
The borough's most distinctive product is something you will not find anywhere else nearby: the large Victorian twins. These are three-story semi-detached houses from the 1880s, some over 2,500 square feet, with four bedrooms, high ceilings and porches, generally trading in the high four-hundreds to low five-hundreds. They are twins in the historic sense, nothing like the modern twin product in the surrounding townships, and they offer more square footage per dollar than almost anything else in the borough. They also come with everything an 1880s house comes with, which is worth walking through carefully before you make an offer.
Schools are Wenonah Public School for the elementary grades, with students then going on to Gateway Regional High School — a small regional district shared with the neighboring boroughs. It is one of the smaller high schools in the county, which is part of the appeal for families who want their kids known by name rather than by number.
Wenonah is walkable in a way most of South Jersey is not, with woods and trails at the edges of the borough and a train-station street grid that predates the car. Mantua Avenue and Glassboro Road connect you out, Route 55 and 295 are both a short drive, and Philadelphia is a straightforward commute.
