Living in Beagle Club

Beagle Club is a large detached neighborhood in the eastern half of Voorhees Township, laid out on long curving lanes off Cooper Road — Covington, Callison, Regan, Bunning, Burnham, Downing, Johnson, Nolen Circle and Whyte Drive. It was built between 1986 and 1993, which puts it a generation past the seventies neighborhoods west of it, and it sits at the top of the township's detached market.

The eastern edge is the thing to understand here. Beagle Club backs directly onto the North Branch of the Cooper River and the woods that follow it — a continuous band of trees and floodplain running the length of the neighborhood. Lots along that side have a rear boundary that ends at forest rather than at another house, and that is not a landscaping decision anyone made. It is topography, and it is permanent. Listing after listing here mentions a wooded lot or a private backyard, and this is why.

The houses are substantial and consistent. Four bedrooms is the baseline, with five-bedroom plans on Covington and Callison, and Contemporary is the dominant style with Colonial and Traditional running alongside it. The detail level is what you would expect at this end of the market: cathedral ceilings and walls of glass, conservatories and sunrooms, granite wet bars, multi-level decks, finished basements built out for theaters and exercise rooms, main-level primary suites in some plans, and three-car garages. In-ground pools turn up here more often than anywhere else in the township, usually paired with stamped patios and mature planting.

Because these houses are large and the owners tend to be settled, Beagle Club produces a handful of listings at a time rather than a steady stream, and the ones that show well do not last. A buyer shopping this tier in Voorhees is generally also looking at Sturbridge Lakes and Lost Tree, and it is worth seeing all three before deciding, because they are genuinely different neighborhoods rather than three versions of the same one. Alluvium is the other large detached option, older and more architecturally varied.

Schools are Voorhees Township for elementary and middle, then Eastern Regional High School through the Eastern Camden County Regional district — you will see both district names on Beagle Club listings depending on who filled in the field, and the answer is the same either way. Kresson Road and Cooper Road put Route 73 close, and PATCO at Ashland is the commuter draw. The recently sold homes across the township are the clearest read on where the top of this market actually settles.
