Large early-sixties colonials on wooded lots north of Kresson Road — live from the MLS.
Charleston Woods occupies the wooded ground between Kresson Road and the Turnpike in the 08003 corner of Cherry Hill Township. Hessian Way and Indian King Drive run through the middle of it, with Laurel Hill Drive, Cottonwood Drive, Red Oak Drive, Roland Court and West Riding Road filling in around them. No association, no gate — large houses on large private lots, which is the point of this whole corner of the township.
The two main street names are worth knowing before you drive in. The Hessians were the German troops hired by the British, and the Indian King is the Haddonfield tavern where New Jersey declared itself a state in 1777 — a building still standing about two miles west of these houses. Both names sit on signs here, side by side. It is a small thing, but it tells you what the developer thought he was building next to, and it is the kind of detail that never makes it into a listing.
Sort the name out before you shop, because this is the trap in this corner of Cherry Hill. Charleston Woods and Charleston Riding are two different neighborhoods, adjacent to one another, both wooded, both in 08003, both feeding the same high school. Woods has a West Riding Road and Riding has an East Riding Drive, which does nothing to help. A portal search for "Charleston Cherry Hill" returns both stirred together, and a buyer touring one while thinking about the other will get confused about what they saw. Ask which one an address sits in.
The houses here are substantial. Five bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths turns up on this street, in Colonial form, dating to the early sixties — which is a lot of bathroom for that vintage and marks these as move-up houses built for people trading up rather than starting out. Basements and garages throughout. The lots are deep and the canopy is closed over most of them, so what you see from the road is trees and driveways rather than houses. That is sixty-plus years of growth on ground that was woodland first, and it is the argument for this neighborhood over anything newer: a builder can match the house, but nobody can deliver the trees. If acreage is the requirement, the Cherry Hill homes on an acre or more search casts wider across the township.
Inventory is scarce. Houses this size on lots this private do not turn over often, and a buyer who wants specifically Charleston Woods should be watching rather than browsing. The neighbors worth walking in the meantime are Charleston Riding just east and Kresson Woods along the same road, with Wilderness Acres the other wooded option at this end of the township.
Schools are Cherry Hill Township Public Schools, with Cherry Hill High School East. Kresson Road runs west into Haddonfield and east toward Route 73, the Turnpike interchange is right there on the western edge, and Route 70 is a few minutes north — so the seclusion is what you see, not what you drive. The recently sold homes across the township are the clearest read on where houses at this level actually settle.
Hessian and Indian King.
Both of them 1777 names.
